GUAM - World War II
The Witness Wood® used to create our limited edition pens are harvested from a rare, mature pre-World War II, Ifit tree that required state permission and permits for maintenance and trimming.
Before World War II, when large mature Ifit trees were still in abundance, it was primarily utilized in home construction supporting poles, flooring, rafters, etc., and the construction of furniture such as chairs, benches, and tables. Today, under Guam law it is illegal to cut live Ifit trees.
Naval assistant Governor of Guam and botanist William E. Safford described Ifit in 1905 as being the most important tree species of Guam.
Ifit is a medium to large tree with tremendous cultural importance on Guam. It is termite resistant and valued for its dense, dark wood, and prior to WWII the most important source of timber for homes and construction; it was named the territorial tree of Guam in 1969.
Today Ifit thrives in a range of Federally Protected habitats from The Limestone Forest to The Mangrove Swamp, but large trees are rare due to the development and demand for wood and the deforestation and destruction during World War II.
The harvesting, cutting down, or removal of any living or dead Ifit tree from any Federal or Government of Guam land is strictly prohibited by law and n the absence of a permit. Violators are subject to prosecution, fines, imprisonment and/or both
