History Salvaged has acquired an incredible piece of white oak, a piece of The General Longstreet Gettysburg Witness Tree! Standing near the Snyder Farmhouse, General Longstreet assembled his troops around the tree and near the farmhouse on July 2 & 3, 1863 in preparation for Picketts Charge.
Much maligned in the post-war years for his criticisms of Robert E. Lee when Confederates looked for a scapegoat at Gettysburg, he became very convenient. He did not favor Pickett’s Charge and thus did not have his corps in position in a timely manner on July 2, 1863.
The United States War Department, which operated Gettysburg National Military Park before the National Park Service took over in 1933, thought that the Longstreet Tree and other “Witness Trees” were important enough to mark and protect. Small brass tags were placed in these trees, and lightning rods were also placed in some.
